    Simultaneous measurement of the microscopic dynamics and the mesoscopic displacement field in soft systems by speckle imaging

    The constituents of soft matter systems such as colloidal suspensions, emulsions, polymers, and biological tissues undergo microscopic random motion, due to thermal energy. They may also experience drift motion correlated over mesoscopic or macroscopic length scales, \textit{e.g.} in response to an internal or applied stress or during flow. We present a new method for measuring simultaneously both the microscopic motion and the mesoscopic or macroscopic drift. The method is based on the analysis of spatio-temporal cross-correlation functions of speckle patterns taken in an imaging configuration.     We merge contributions from the New Urban Economics and inequality measurement to assess quality of life (QOL) in a given city. We take the point of view of a city planner in favor of an even accessibility to amenities within the city. Instead of the average value of amenities computed in the Roback (1982) QOL index, our index captures the value of its multidimensional "certainty equivalent". We apply this methodology to derive a QOL index for the city of Milan.Urban quality of life, amenities, hedonic prices, inequality index, just city.

    DataScience-Polimi at SemEval-2022 Task 8: Stacking Language Models to Predict News Article Similarity

    In this paper, we describe the approach we designed to solve SemEval-2022 Task 8: Multilingual News Article Similarity. We collect and use exclusively textual features (title, description and body) of articles. Our best model is a stacking of 14 Transformer-based Language models fine-tuned on single or multiple fields, using data in the original language or translated to English. It placed fourth on the original leaderboard, sixth on the complete official one and fourth on the English-subset official one. We observe the data collection as our principal source of error due to a relevant fraction of missing or wrong fields

    Signalling Design in Sensor-Assisted mmWave Communications for Cooperative Driving

    Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) Vehicle-To-Vehicle (V2V) communications are a key enabler for connected and automated vehicles, as they support the low-latency exchange of control signals and high-resolution imaging data for maneuvering coordination. The employment of mmWave V2V communications calls for Beam Alignment and Tracking (BAT) procedures to ensure that the antenna beams are properly steered during motion. The conventional beam sweeping approach is known to be unsuited for the high vehicular mobility and its large overhead reduces transmission efficiency. A promising solution to reduce BAT signalling foresees the integration of V2V communication systems with on-board vehicle sensors. We focus on a cooperative sensor-assisted architecture for mmWave V2V communications in line of sight, where vehicles exchange the estimate of antenna position and its uncertainty to compute the optimal beam direction and dimension. We analyze and compare different signalling strategies for sharing the information on antenna estimate, evaluating the tradeoff between signalling overhead and performance loss for different position and uncertainty encoding strategies. Main attention is given to differential quantization on both the antenna position and uncertainty. Analyses over realistic urban mobility trajectories suggest that differential approaches introduce a negligible performance loss while significantly reducing the BAT signalling communication overhead
